How to Teach a Cat Its Name in Two Weeks
A short daily routine that works, and why your cat ignoring you is not a failure.
Teaching a cat its name is not like teaching a dog. You are not building obedience, you are building an association: this sound means something good is about to happen. Done properly it takes about two weeks.
The basic routine
Say the name once, clearly, in a normal voice. The moment they look, give a treat. Not after they walk over, not after they sit, just for the look. Repeat five times, then stop. Do that two or three times a day.
Five repetitions is the important part. Cats disengage quickly when something becomes repetitive, and a short session that ends while they are still interested works far better than a long one that ends in boredom.
Use one name only
This is where most households go wrong. If a cat called Oliver is also called Ollie, Olly Boy, Mister, Fluff and Get Down From There, learning takes much longer. Pick the one word everyone uses until it is solid, then the nicknames stop mattering.
Never use the name for bad news
If the name is what you say before the carrier comes out, before medicine, or when you are annoyed, the cat learns exactly that. Use a different phrase for those moments and keep the name clean.
What success actually looks like
An ear swivel. A head turn. A pause mid walk. Those are the wins. A cat that comes running every time you call is a lovely bonus, not the standard, and plenty of cats that clearly know their name will still choose to ignore it.
That is not stubbornness or stupidity. Cats were never selectively bred to obey the way dogs were, so recognition and compliance are two separate things.
When it is not working
If there is no response after two weeks, check three things. Is the treat actually worth it to this cat, since a boring biscuit motivates nobody. Is the name too similar to another word used constantly in the house. And are you saying it in a different voice each time, which makes it sound like a different word.
